The main difference between a king and a California king is the mattress size. A standard king mattress is 76" x 80", while a california king mattress is 72" x 84". If you’re deciding between the two, we recommend taking measurements to ensure the Cal king will fit, allowing enough space for the bed frame which can add inches to the perimeter of the mattress depending on the design.
A split king mattress has the same dimensions as a standard king, but can be beneficial for couples who have different preferences or opt for an adjustable base. The combination of the split king mattress with the adjustable base enables both partners full control of their side of the bed while providing increased motion isolation.
Would it surprise you to learn that an eastern king shares the same standard mattress sizes as the standard king? Well, it’s true - there really is no difference! According to mattress lore, the Eastern king was nothing more than a counter to the California king, created by a Los Angeles merchant shortly after the Second World War. Since we’ve come to think of this size as a standard king, the “Eastern” has largely dropped off.
If you’re upgrading from a full or queen mattress to a king, you may want to consider upgrading your pillows as well. Two standard pillows will leave about 12 inches of empty mattress on either side of them, while two king size pillows fit across a king size mattress with about 4 inches on each side.
